Governor Riley Applauds House for Passing Pro-Life Legislation

MONTGOMERY - Governor Bob Riley released the following statement on Thursday after the House of Representatives approved legislation to protect pregnant women and their unborn children.

"I applaud House members for their strong show of support for this bill. Pregnant women who have been harmed by violent crime know they are not the only victims. Their unborn child is also a victim, and both should be protected by law."

During his State of the State Address in February, Governor Riley said passage of the bill should be a priority for the Legislature.

Under the bill, when someone commits a violent act against a pregnant mother that results in the loss of her unborn child, the perpetrator can be charged with murdering the child, even if the mother survives.
